Divorce can put a damper on holidays if proper steps ignored

Going through the dissolution of a Texas marriage can take its toll financially, especially for couples with high-value assets. It can also cause emotional challenges for those with minor children. A couple of tips may help parents who are getting a divorce to make the most of the holidays going forward.

First, if possible, discuss holiday schedules well ahead of time. Thereafter, one could send an amicable confirmation a little closer to the holidays to ensure that both parties are still on the same page. However, the sooner the parents explore any areas of discord they may have, the more likely they are to address them through reasonable discussion. This can avoid a trip to court before the holidays arrive.

Second, it may be helpful to develop a holiday schedule for the children to see and then post it in a visible location. If everyone in the family is familiar with the schedule, the transitions are likely to go more smoothly. An attorney can even review a holiday schedule or propose one, which may ultimately save stress, time and money in the long run.

Whether in Texas or another state, divorce is a challenging process that can be even more complicated by child custody issues. Unfortunately, the holidays are a time when child custody-related battles can put a damper on this time of the year. Appropriate legal support may help the parties involved to sort through these matters while always keeping the best interests of the child/ren first and foremost.
