Child custody issues can spark stress during divorce

Parental divorce can be a huge stressor for children in Texas. If there is friction about how to handle matters related to child custody, the stress may be greater. According to new research, however, pediatricians can play a significant role in empowering children to deal with divorce.

The researchers said it is important for pediatricians to watch out for warning signs of a dysfunctional marriage as well as be aware of co-parenting relationships. In light of this, pediatricians have been encouraged to discuss how well a family is functioning and to offer relevant advice, as necessary. In addition, in the event of divorce, children's doctors have been instructed to try to maintain a positive relationship with each of the parents.

According to the researchers, families should also be referred to child-oriented and mental health services, if needed. Counseling for the children that is age appropriate might help to reduce the possible negative effects of the dissolution of a marriage. Likewise, if the parents receive appropriate guidance, it may help them to cope with the divorce more effectively as well.

If two parents who are going through divorce in Texas can find common ground, they may be able to work on a parenting agreement that reflects both of their wishes when dealing with child custody and visitation. If they cannot see eye to eye, however, a judge will resolve the couple's child custody issues. In this situation, the court will focus on what is in the best interests of any children involved.
