Joint child custody offers benefits

The process of divorce can be just as difficult for the children as it is for the parents in Texas. This is particularly true when the parents cannot see eye to eye on how child custody should be handled. Various versions of child custody exist, depending on a family's situation.

In some cases, parents decide to share custody of the child -- specifically, joint physical custody. In this situation, they usually create a parenting agreement that they can then present to a judge for ratification. This arrangement is created based on the parents' working schedules, the children's school schedules and the children's needs. When the parents live near each other, they often rotate months or weeks with the children.

If parents live farther away after getting divorced, they may choose a joint physical custody arrangement where the children will stay mostly with just one of the parents. However, they will split holidays and weekends between both parents. In other custody arrangements, the children can remain in the marital home, and the parents are the ones who move in and out of the house based on the arrangement. This may be especially helpful when there are young children who are emotionally attached to the family home.

A huge benefit of joint child custody in Texas is that the children can stay in touch with both of the parents and maintain relationships with both sides. In addition, both parents share the burdens associated with rearing the children. An attorney can help with putting together a parenting agreement that works for both parents and is in the best interests of the child.
