Husband's job status major factor in divorce

The dissolution of marriage is sometimes unavoidable in Texas due to irreconcilable differences. Other times, job- and money-related issues lead to divorce. Specifically, according to new research, the biggest cause of divorce is the job status of the husband.

Researches from Harvard University found that men who lacked jobs had a much higher chance statistically of going through marital split-ups compared to men with stable jobs. In fact, men with no jobs increased their chances of divorce by about 30 percent. The same findings were found for men who had not worked for extended periods of time.

The study did have some limitations, in that it did not include men who purposely decided to fulfill stay-at-home parent roles, nor did it include same-sex couples. Based on the research, how labor in the home is divided can also play a major role in divorce. Researchers emphasized that men without jobs need to communicate what they expect and desire, and that their spouses must do the same. Starting businesses or taking side jobs may be helpful options for men who are unable to claim traditional full-time jobs.

When divorce is inevitable, many couples are not prepared for the financial and emotional roller coaster that comes with it. However, if a couple can find common ground at the negotiation table, their split-up may be more amicable than initially expected. An attorney in Texas can help with addressing potentially contentious matters such as property division and spousal support, so that one's rights are protected during this type of family law proceeding.
